Formative assessment

Formative assessment is a type of assessment that monitors student learning progress throughout an instructional period.

Formative assessment enables teachers to improve their effectiveness by adapting their approach according to student comprehension. It also allows students to take ownership of their learning, taking the focus away from grades and performance and to the learning itself.

Good formative assessment is quick, regular, and low-stakes.

• Identify groups within class who may need additional support
• Revisit material when comprehension was low
• Consider sharing the results at a class-wide level - students may take comfort in knowing that a majority of students didn’t get answer right
• Reflect on what the data is telling you, and consider how you might incorporate this into future lesson plans
